JEWS AND GERMANS – ASPECTS OF THE TRUE SELF
(Portraits of Jewish Holocaust Survivors & their German Counterparts, 1981-85)
These amazing portraits, of Jewish Holocaust survivors and their German counterparts, were prompted by a number of factors. First, a number of books and articles began appearing denying the Holocaust. More important, there was a silence about the Holocaust that imbued Berghash’s childhood in Buffalo, NY, even as WWII permeated every aspect of life. The project was an act of personal reparation. These portraits number between 6 to 18 images, and have an interview excerpt hand-written below each. There are over 100 subjects in this project.
